- 1856 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-183, Pollock-217, Snow-4. Rarity-7+. Proof-63 (PCGS). The obverse and reverse designs are the same as those of the famous copper-nickel strikings of the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. Examples of this particular variety feature the Pointed U obverse die mated with the Low Leaves reverse die (Snow-4 die marriage), the latter die having been introduced in 1858 and suggesting that the Pollock-217 pieces were also produced in that year. Struck in nickel alloy (possibly 25% nickel, 75% copper) with a plain edge.<br /> A very rare off-metal striking of the legendary 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, Pollock-217 has an extant population of probably no more than five individual coins. Both the Pollock (1994) and Snow (2001) references pedigree just three examples, although we are fairly certain that the present example is a different piece; it has been off the market for quite some time. Sharply struck for the variety, a touch of softness to the centers is indicative of the lower relief used in creation of these dies. Overall silver-gray in sheen, with few blemishes of note, and none that are worthy of individual attention.
