- GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1652. Commonwealth (1649-60). NGC AU-58.
5.98 gms. S-3217; KM-390.1; North-2724; ESC-986. Sun mint mark (London Mint). Regardless of date, one of the very finest Shillings issued during the Commonwealth that we have seen. Obviously residing untouched in a cabinet for ages, the surfaces display luxurious tone throughout, the open fields being smooth gray, while the designs are outlined with antique amber golden hues. Closer inspection displays virtually no evidence of wear, with the slightly lighter gray color on the raised outlines of the shields on both sides obviously being a determining factor in the grade. Most important to the appearance however is the strike, which far exceeds the majority of survivors on this piece. On both sides, the legends appear full and sharp with minimal signs of doubling, while the central shields are similarly bold. When compared to the Eric Newman example of this date (NGC MS-63, which realized $3,055 in 2014), there is little question that this piece has more eye appeal, with a similar, albeit better overall strike and edges that aren't crude with minor planchet splits. Truly, this coin has all the qualities of a Mint State example, with some, such as the strike, which are even better. A coin that deserves close attention from the specialist as such.
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
