- 1855-C Gold Dollar. Type II. MS-60 (NGC). The 1855-C has long been known as a key date in all high grades, with Mint State examples prohibitively rare. Between both major grading services they have seen a combined 300 pieces in all, of which at most 17 have been graded as mint state with MS-62 the finest certified of this rare issue. Mintage of 9,803 pieces for the year. Charlotte had difficulty with coinage as many of these are poorly struck at the center of the reverse where the top of 8 and LL of DOLLAR are soft, along with Liberty's curls below her temple--the area precisely opposite. Furthermore multiple clashmarks are present in the fields as the dies came together without a planchet on numerous occasions during the production of this date. Natural light copper-gold toning through the legends and devices, with pleasing luster throughout. Clean surfaces and minimal handling marks or scuffs. A middle die state coined prior to the lapping of the obverse die (to remove or reduce clashing evidence and fine cracks), notably there is a fine crack to Liberty's mouth through the T of UNITED, another to her bust from the base of the obverse. A memorable offering for the specialist.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
The 1855-C gold dollar is a very curious coin, as even the nicest pieces are apt to have clash marks, planchet problems, and the like. That said, the “rustic” nature of this issue, so to speak, gives it a special appeal. More than just a few advanced specialists would enjoy studying this coin more carefully than they would a Superb Gem proof of a Philadelphia Mint date. If gold dollars are your specialty, here is a very special coin.
