- 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Shilling. W-490, Noe-8, Crosby 5-A. URS-5. IN at Bottom. EF-45 (NGC). This is one of the rarest varieties of the Oak Tree Shilling, the URS rating provided by Q. David Bowers and Ken Bressett (<em>Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins</em>, 2009) suggests that fewer than 20 different examples are known to exist. This piece is a later die state with a prominent break (as struck) over the upper-left obverse that has also resulted in lack of detail on the reverse near the upper-right border. The balance of the devices are suitably bold from a generally well-centered strike. Only the obverse has some of the peripheral devices partially off the flan from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock. The planchet is also a bit irregular in shape, but not excessively so for the type. Rich lavender-charcoal patina with more vivid undertones coming into view at direct angles--an important Oak Tree Shilling that is sure to appeal to the advanced collector.
