- GREAT BRITAIN. Noble, 1361-69. Edward III (1327-77). NGC AU-58.
S-1503; North-1232; Fr-95. Fourth Coinage. Treaty Period. King standing on ship, holding sword and shield; Reverse: "E" at center of cross; alternating crowns and lis within eight arches. Cross Potent. Struck during the very dark fourteenth century, with global cooling leading to recurrent crop failures while the bubonic plague decimated many cities with pestilence. Yet coinage carried on with this terrific gold Noble bearing testament to the human spirit of perseverance during those trying times. A well centered example with clear and easily readable legends and almost no evidence of strike doubling; an unusually nice example for this quality alone. The color is admirable, with a bright even golden glow. A touch of wear can be seen across most of the high points of this fully original example. In addition to the absence of doubling, the flan itself is of extremely high quality and free of laminations or other defects. Overall, a most impressive hammered gold piece, and for collectors missing the type, a terrific opportunity to secure a wonderful example of the issue.
Estimate: $2,500 - $3,500.
