A preening peacock has nothing on this INTENSELY TONED beauty! Seldom encountered with such depth of color in concentric rings graduating from the rims across the frosty fields. Boasting shades of vibrant navy blue, eggplant, iris, salmon and gold. Luster pops off the fields despite the deep color and catches the eye when twirled in the light. A couple of well concealed marks are seen with strong magnification above the word CENTS on the reverse.
This design was struck for just four years from 1836-1839 with the Reeded Edge, and struck using a steam press, enabling the mint to incorporate a closed collar, creating the reeding on the edge, and alleviating the need for a second striking to put the lettering on the edge, as in previous issues. This helped to obtain a uniform diameter, a raised rim (which helped to protect the central design elements from heavy wear), and a more efficient method of striking.
