- 1855 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-168, Pollock-193. Rarity-4. Bronze. Plain Edge. Proof-61 BN (NGC). CAC.
The obverse depicts an eagle in full flight to the left with wings above and surrounded by thirteen stars with date below. On the reverse a closed laurel wreath with fruit encircles ONE / CENT with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding. Dark brown with classic reflective fields and well struck devices. Remarkably the dies both show strong evidence of clashing. This motif obviously proved quite popular but the size was still deemed too large for circulation, hence more modifications were made and the Flying Eagle design was nearly born with this pattern cent, with an even smaller rendition being accepted in 1856.
PCGS# 11720.
