- DUPLICATES FROM THE BLACKCAT COLLECTION Like the J-161 above, this popular pattern issue was struck as part of an effort to make the cent more efficient. This die pair was used to strike coins in both copper (J-163) and bronze (J-164). Also, like the J-161, lighter weight planchets are thought to be "originals" and heavier ones "restrikes." Presumably PCGS weighed this coin to ascertain the Original designation it placed on the old green tag. An eagle flies level on this popular pattern, 13 stars around, date below; the reverse has the denomination within a wreath, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in bronze with a plain edge, this is a Rarity-5 pattern. It is thought 100 were struck in total, between the J-163 and J-164. Pleasing and near GEM, this coin has sleek, reflective surfaces. Light to medium brown with hints of deep red and gold that pop in a light. Well struck, the eye appeal is bold, worthy of the CAC bean and the Eagle Eye Photo Seal. PCGS 6, NGC 2, CAC 2. This coin is ex Kagin's March 2017, at $6,022. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $5,500. What a great example worthy of placement in a great set of patterns or advanced set of large cents, or Flying Eagle cents. The collectible context for this near-GEM are nearly endless. Cert.
