详细说明: (1751-1836) 4th President of the U.S. (1809-17) An early opponent of British colonial measures, he helped draft the Constitution for the new state of Virginia (1776), served in the Continental Congress (1780-83, 1787), and was a member of the Virginia legislature (1784-86). A principal contributor to the Federalist Papers, he was largely responsible for securing ratification of the Constitution in Virginia. As a congressman from Virginia (1789-97), he was a strong advocate of the Bill of Rights. After Jefferson triumphed in the presidential election of 1800, Madison became (1801) his secretary of state.
