1855-D Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 32-W. Medium D. AU-55 (NGC). This is the scarcer of the two-known die marriages of the 1855-D Half Eagle, an issue that is scarce and underrated in it own right within the Dahlonega Mint Five-Dollar gold series. Even green-gold color to both sides, the surfaces with only light wear and small, wispy abrasions in evidence. A soft strike is also noted for the centers--a very common attribute for the issue. The 1855-D (22,432 pieces produced) is similar in overall rarity to the 1839-D, 1846-D/D, 1849-D and 1858-D, although it is rarer than all of these other Half Eagles when we consider only those coins extant in AU and Mint State grades.
