- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-930, Pollock-1035. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 BN (NGC). The William Barber design featuring a Seated Liberty figure facing left, surrounded by 13 stars. Her right hand rests on a shield, while her left hand holds an olive branch. A Liberty pole is partly concealed behind the shield. A scroll crossing the shield features the raised inscription, LIBERTY. The date is below. The reverse features a wreath of corn and cotton, with 50 CENTS inside and STANDARD above. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Judd notes the "illogical die combination with no mention of the United States of America." <br /> As far as is now known, all examples of the Judd-927 through Judd-932 show raised LIBERTY across the shield ribbon. Fewer than a dozen examples are known of this rare pattern. This piece features sharply defined surfaces that are deeply toned in steel-blue and purple-red shades, particularly in the crevices. There are no singularly mentionable marks other than some scattered hairlines under the toning.
