- A very popular issue, the J-233 is a muling of the 1839-1859 Stars obverse type with the reverse type of 1860-1891. Called a transitional pattern, and nicknamed "a coin without a country" this has always been popularly collected among advanced Seated dime collectors, as well as pattern connoisseurs. PCGS reports a mintage of 12, the current Populations are somewhat higher than that, but fewer than three dozen have been graded by PCGS and NGC combined in all grades. Listed as "High Rarity-6" which means 13-20 are known in all grades, and if you take into account crossovers and regrades, it is likely the actual number is towards the high end of the R-6+ range. Blazing mirrors beam boldly all over. The fields show dramatic die polish lines from heavy polishing resulting in a deeply reflective finish in the fields and frosted devices. Untoned surfaces have a dramatic Cameo contrast especially on the reverse. This coin has a freshly minted look devoid of flaws or any kind of toning. The eye appeal is incredible. PCGS 1, NGC 1. Neither has sold. A non-CAM PCGS PR65 CAC sold for $15,000 in 2019 and a non-CAM PCGS PR66 CAC sold in April 2014 for $36,719; the splotchy toned Simpson PCGS PR65+ CAM CAC sold for $22,800 in February 2021. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $25,000. A popular and historic rarity that is always eagerly sought by collectors. This GEM will sell for a strong bid. Cert.
