- 1858-S Liberty Half Eagle. EF-40 (PCGS). OGH. Bright honey-gold with lively retained luster, a sharp strike, and a minimum of visible surface marks or blemishes that can be detected by the naked eye. While 18,600 examples of the date were struck, the vast majority of the coins saw heavy use in local commerce -- the choice EF-40 example here is about average in quality among survivors from the modest mintage. Indeed, fewer than 30 examples of the date have been certified as EF-40 to AU-58, and PCGS has certified just one Mint State coin, that called MS-62. Also of note is the fact that PCGS suggests that fewer than 100 1858-S half eagles can be accounted for in any grade. Choice for the grade and an ideal opportunity for an advanced Liberty Head half eagle aficionado.
