- 1881-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-58+ (PCGS). All three of the New Orleans Mint Eagles dated 1880-1882 are important rarities in the numismatic market of the early 21st century. The 1881-O is the most elusive issue in this group, and it ranks third in both absolute and high-grade rarity among the 16 O-mint Eagles of the Motto type. The present example comes down to us from a mintage of just 8,350 pieces, and it is one of perhaps only 135-165 coins extant in all grades (per Doug Winter, Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1838-1909, 2006 edition).
Freedom from all but the lightest wear, combined with the retention of near-complete luster, establishes this coin as a Condition Census survivor. Both sides are sharply struck with pretty color in a bright khaki-rose hue. Scattered abrasions are commensurate with the grade, and most are singularly inconspicuous to the eye. With Mint State examples all but unobtainable for the 1881-O Ten, this just-miss 58+ is sure to elicit strong bids from advanced collectors of Liberty and/or New Orleans Mint gold coinage.
