- 1876 Twenty-Cent Piece. BF-4. Rarity-4. MS-64 (PCGS).
This richly and originally toned example exhibits a bold blend of steel-gray, golden-copper and deep rose. The luster is full and frosty, the strike razor sharp from the rims to the centers. Introduced in 1875, by 1876 the unpopularity of this denomination was already confirmed. Only a perfunctory quantity of coins was struck at Philadelphia in the latter year, none at San Francisco, and almost the entire Carson City mintage of 10,000 pieces was melted. Today, the 1876 Philadelphia Mint twenty-cent piece is popular among specialists in the more unusual denominations, as well as with better date type set collectors seeking to avoid the common 1875-S.
PCGS# 5299. NGC ID: 23R8.
