This particular piece has one been one of Legend Numismatics favorite CC's. For a Capped Die, this coin is exceptional in EVERY respect! It also happens to be TIED FOR FINEST at PCGS! Capped Dies are much softer in strike and appearance compared to a regular GEM 79-CC. This coin has remarkable clean super clean and satiny smooth surfaces. To the naked eye the worst you see is a few small frost breaks. Even when using a strong glass there are NO distractions to be found. Both sides are a superb original creamy white. Miss Liberty and the details are thickly frosted and have crisp bold strikes. Her cheek is super clean and will please any picky grader. The eye appeal is magnificent! The Capped Die variety is avidly sought, and the name is a bit of a misnomer, some catalogers more accurately call it "CC over CC" Listed as a Top 100 variety in the VAM series, it is a popular Red Book listed issue. In the past, the Capped Die was thought of as "a poor man's 1879-CC," but modern research has proven how rare this issue is! PCGS 16, NGC 7, CAC 6. There are five coins graded in MS65+ and NONE are finer! Only one has ever sold in auction, a non-CAC coin that sold in March 2019 for $52,800; the MS65 CAC sold in the Ralph and Lois Stone Collection brought $50,000 in May 2018. Collector's Universe lists a value of $62,500 and it would not be a shock if this GEM realized well in excess of that amount!
