- The 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 slug is an American numismatic classic, one of the greatest designs ever struck by the United States mint. With the heft of nearly 2.5 ounces of gold, you really cannot help but have a true sense of WONDER when holding one of these rarities. Of the original authorized mintage of 1,500 coins just 645 survived the melting pot. Its status as one of the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins in the book by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth make this a truly important and desired type coin. Featuring a classical themed design, the obverse shows the helmeted head of Minvera, the goddess of wisdom and her owl on the reverse. Dolphins are fitted into the angles, representing the wedding of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Panama Canal opening, which the Panama Pacific Expo honored, was one of the feats of human ingenuity and greatly expanded global trade. The $50 designs, in round and octagonal formats hearkened back to the territorial issues of Wass-Molitor and Augustus Humbert. This GEM Octagonal slug glistens with a glossy, satin mint luster that is bright and brilliant. Every detail is exceptionally well struck. A strong glass reveals one or two of the most insignificant ticks but they have no bearing either on the stunning eye appeal or technical quality. Truly, this GEM is one of the FINEST we have handled. Only 645 were struck. PCGS 23, NGC 44, CAC 13. DO NOT let the pops fool you, only two PCGS/CAC MS65s have ever sold in auction, including one in April 2016 for $205,625. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $185,000 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $193,200. One of the most impressive and beautiful types in the entire cannon of American numismatics, this coin is rightfully listed among the Top 100 U.S. coins and worthy of a superb set. Cert.
