- Historic 1907 Jamestown Tercentennial Expo Medal
Awarded to President Theodore Roosevelt
1907 Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition Award Medal. By Tiffany & Co. Bronze. Awarded to President Theodore Roosevelt. MS-62 (PCGS).
63 mm. Obv: Native American couple sitting on a shoreline watching an approaching ship, the name and date of the exposition around. Rev:Seven-line inscription within a wreath of corn and tobacco with an eagle and exposition building below. The final line of the inscription is the name of the medal's recipient, expressed on a small cartouche.
The 1907 Jamestown Tercentennial Expo was held in Norfolk, Virginia to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in the Virginia Colony. The Expo was opened by President Roosevelt on April 26, 1907 and it lasted until December 1st with an average of 13,000 daily visitors, or about 3 million total visitors. These award medals are relatively scarce in all formats compared to the So-Called Dollars issued for the event. It is thought that while the dies were prepared by Tiffany, the award medals were actually struck at the U.S. Mint display on the exposition grounds.
This particular piece is among the most significant examples known, having been awarded to President Theodore Roosevelt himself. It is sharply struck with an appealing glossy texture. The surfaces have been cleaned and retoned in blend of pinkish and sandy-gold patina.
