- 10 Ducat Medal Celebrating Victory at the Battle of Khotyn
POLAND. Gold Medallic 10 Ducats, 1673. John Sobieski. PCGS Genuine--Plugged, EF Details.
H-Cz-7721 (R6); Raczynski-186. Weight: 32.12 gms. Obverse: Bareheaded, armored, and mantled bust of John Sobieski facing, head slightly right; Reverse: View of the Ottoman camp at Khotyn in disarray and being stormed by the Poles; in background, Dniester River and Chocim Castle; above, inscription in five lines; in exergue: A. MDCLXXIII X. NOV [embris] AD CHOCIMUM. A RARE medal commemorating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's victory at the Battle of Khotyn, this piece celebrates the decisive victory with an intricate and handsome engraving. This example has seen handling, as evidenced by the wearing of the design elements on the portrait. The noted plug is seen radiating downward from 12 o'clock, which likely accounts for this medal being slightly underweight. Despite this piece's problems, it remains a historically valuable and quite elusive offering that is a highlight in any grade.
Estimate: $40,000 - $65,000.
Provenance: From the Anthony J. Taraszka Collection.
Ex: Stack's Coin Galleries, Styka Collection (1962) Lot #434.
