- Ex Naftzger-Reynolds, as noted on the insert. This "slider" 1802 S-234 has a bold look, interesting provenance, and in a very pleasing grade. The S-234 is a Rarity-3 die variety, and this AU58+ ranks as Condition Census #6 by Del Bland, #8 by Noyes, #8 in the Breen reference and regarded #5 finest by our consignor. Wonderful, even brown with steely overtones on the devices and ample original red color clings to the recesses of the design types on the obverse. Struck from a later die state, Breen's IV, which features the formation of the cud above the BE in LIBERTY and multiple die clashes. The clash marks created a very interesting arc of lines on the lower reverse. There is some very minor roughness not struck out of the planchet near UNI. Sharply struck, the surfaces are generally smooth and there are no distracting lines or marks of any kind. The pedigree of this coin dates back to the George C. Carlton Collection, sold in Thomas Elder's December 1917 sale, lot 710. After a number of unknown or unrecorded intermediaries, it ended up with Dr. William Sheldon. From there, it was in the collection of the American Numismatic Society. Transferred to the Collection of Roy E. "Ted" Naftzger, following a settlement between Naftzger and the ANS which involved a number of coins Dr. Sheldon had swapped during his research for his famed works on early large cents. Naftzger sold this coin, via Bill Noyes, to Tom Reynolds. Tom Reynolds Collection, Goldberg, February 2016, lot 264. PCGS 27, NGC 10, CAC 7. There are four AU58+s graded, remarkably all were in the Reynolds Collection. The Reynolds sale in February 2016 took place in a weaker market. Since then, other coins have resold for more. This piece has a great look, pedigree, and the AU58+ grade is oh so popular among type collectors. What a great coin! Cert. Number 32982298 PCGS # 36311.00
