- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION WOW! What an amazing 1850-O half! Much of the 2.456 million piece mintage would likely be melted down as the price of silver increased throughout the first few years of the 1850s. As such, Mint State coins as a category are very scarce, and in GEM, they are extremely rare. This one ranks among the VERY FINEST KNOWN, with just a single MS66+ graded higher. Billowing mint brilliance dances boldly in the fields enlivening the splashes of dappled rich golden toning. As you rotate the lustrous surfaces in a light, delicate iridescent, pastel hues come to the fore, especially on the reverse. A precision blow from the dies rendered every detail to its finest advantage, creating razor sharp definition in Liberty's drapery and eagle's feather details. The surfaces have a few well hidden ticks in the fields, but mostly covered up by the lovely toning and you need a strong glass to see any of them! What a wonderful type coin or example for this incredibly challenging date. Ex Richard Jewell Collection, Stack's Bowers, August 2013, lot 4140; our consignor, via Legend Numismatics. PCGS 1, NGC 1, CAC 2. This marvelous Premium GEM sold for $25,850 nearly a decade ago. The Gardner coin sold for $28,200 in May 2015 and is now in a 66+ holder. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $35,000 and the CAC CPG value is $36,000. This coin is bound for a world class Seated Liberty half dollar collection. Good luck. Cert.
