- FROM THE WOLVERINE COLLECTION. Earlier ex Eliasberg and Simpson Collections, as noted on the holder. This is an amazing, SUPERB GEM dime that traces its pedigree back to the year of mintage. Its distinctive, fully Prooflike look lead the cataloger in 1996 to opine that this coin was possibly a branch mint Proof. Fully flashy mirrors are deep, contrasting against sharply struck and frosty devices. Brilliant in every way, with a pearly iridescent silver dominating with some pale, pastel toning. The devices are fully frosted and have bold, crisp strikes. With the aid of a strong glass we note some light wisps of contact, nothing that would detract from the amazing eye appeal. Walter Breen noted 1893-O dollars that were struck in Proof in his Proof coin Encyclopedia, he does not mention other denominations, but it is entirely possible that there were Proof dimes struck. This coin was bought by J.M. Clapp from the June 1894 William Friesner Sale (likely acquired directly from the mint the previous year). The Clapp Collection was sold, en bloc to Louis Eliasberg in 1942 by Stack's. This was lot 1246 in the May 1996 Bowers & Merena sale of the Eliasberg collection. It then went into the famed Law Collection, via Legend Numismatics in 1998; to Bob Simpson Collection, via Legend Numismatics. Ex Bob Simpson Collection, Legend Rare Coin Auctions' December 2014 Regency Auction, lot 63. PCGS 3, NGC 1, CAC 3. This amazing SUPERB GEM last sold in our October 2017 Regency Auction for $9,106 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $11,400. There is a single MS68 grade finer, but this coin is likely UNIQUE with its fully Prooflike eye appeal. Cert. Number 6666207 PCGS # 4801
