- Rare Proof 1857 Half Dollar
1857 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC).
Vivid peripheral toning in steel-blue and reddish-russet frames otherwise brilliant surfaces. With no toning in and around the centers, a boldly cameoed finish is readily appreciable as the coin rotates under a light. Both sides are fully struck, as befits the method of manufacture, and the surfaces are fully Choice in preservation with only trivial signs of numismatic handling. Visually appealing, and rare from both absolute and condition standpoints.
Produced just prior to launching of the Mint's campaign to market Proof coins to a wider numismatic audience, the 1857 half dollar has an unknown mintage in this format that Q. David Bowers (2016) estimates at just 30 to 50 pieces. Among the survivors, few are as technically superb as the offered coin, as confirmed by extremely limited population figures in the PCGS and NGC Cameo categories. Fit for inclusion in the finest cabinet.
Provenance: From the BASH Collection. Earlier ex "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green estate; partnership of Eric P. Newman and Burdette G. Johnson, doing business as St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. NGC Census: 2; with a single Proof-67 Cameo finer in this category. The corresponding PCGS Population is 0/1. Neither service reports any grading events in the Deep/Ultra Cameo category.
