- An incredibly RARE and IMPORTANT Civil War era Philadelphia mint quarter eagle. The economic and political stresses brought on by the Civil War led to a suspension of specie payments in late 1861, which caused widespread hoarding of gold coins; mintages dropped dramatically. After producing zero circulation strike quarter eagles in 1863, the mintage increased to a miniscule original mintage of 2,824, of which fewer than two dozen (18-22 estimated) are known. The majority of these are well circulated, and precious few that survive are finer. Over the years, many collectors opted for a Proof striking of this date in place of a circulated one: Eliasberg only had a Proof striking; Harry Bass had a coin described as "Net EF-40; sharpness of AU50 or finer, but with traces of tooling." The Norweb Collection had an "AU55." No AU50 has sold since February 2002! Indeed, the only circulation strike 1864 quarter eagles to have sold in this decade is an XF45 in the 2019 ANA Auction and the BigMo PCGS AU58 CAC we sold that earlier came from the 2017 ANA auction. Traces of flash cling to the lightly circulated surfaces on both sides. The color is a rich orange-tinged gold with soft iridescent overtones. The definition is sharp and shows essentially full, crisp details on both obverse and reverse showing little wear on the highest points. A strong glass shows some minor ticks and traces of contact, which might account for the AU50 grade assigned by PCGS. Housed in an older generation blue tag holder. PCGS 3, NGC 0. Since the last AU50 sold two decades ago we have to look at the two most recent APRs from other grades. The XF45 mentioned above sold for $50,400 in 2019 and the PCGS AU58 CAC in the BigMo collection sold for $111,625. In AU50, the Collectors Universe value is listed at $75,000 and we would not be shocked if this major Civil War date rarity sold for that, or more. Good luck. Cert. Number 5624160 PCGS # 7800
