- A pleasant example of the variety. While 29,392 half eagles were struck in 1841 at the Dahlonega mint, PCGS CoinFacts estimates about 237 survived in all grades. The present coin has a medium honey gold patina, and a satiny surface. The wear is minor and limited to the high points of the design, which retains sharply defined features. A few contact marks are noted and are natural for a coin that saw some use in commercial channels. The eye appeal is pleasing overall. PCGS 8, NGC 9. The most recent PCGS-graded example to sell was the Fairmont-JBR coin that brought $8,400 in August 2022; that was the first time in a decade a PCGS AU53 sold in auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $8,500. The last PCGS AU55 sold six years ago. Clearly these, despite being "available" do not come up for auction with any real frequency. Bid accordingly.
