1794 S-41 R3. PCGS graded AU-55.Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with a subtle hint of lighter reddish brown toning mixed in on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and hints of mint frost remain visible in protected areas. The only marks are a few light nicks on the cheek and neck, a trio of tiny scratches in the field off the end of the nose, and some microscopic planchet chips in the field above the end of the pole (as struck). MDS, Breen state VI early. The die crack from AT in STATES reaches the left side of the O in ONE but the additional crack connecting the N's in ONE and CENT has not formed. There is a partial double profile from the forehead down to the chin with additional doubling on the bust (from die bounce or shift). Graded EF40 Choice and tied for CC#2 behind only the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #21271. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#2 behind the same ANS coin. Our grade is EF40. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1923 Chapman reference on the cents of 1794 and this is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia for early large cents. A superb cent that has the eye appeal of a significantly higher grade. And it comes with an excellent provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer.(PCGS # 35588) Value $25,000 - UP
