- 1884 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-1724, Pollock-1934. Rarity-6-. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar. Jefferson Portrait. MS-64 PL (NGC). CAC. Nickel. Plain Edge. A curious pattern for the period as the new Liberty nickel had just been launched the year prior, and here again the perforated center makes yet another cameo appearance. In theory, the perforated and scalloped center allowed for a more robust coin in terms of thickness and diameter, easier to get a hold of in a purse or pocket. The lettering on the obverse is larger too, with the date below and the 13 stars encircling the central perforation. On the reverse the denomination is stated as FIVE CENTS split both above and below, with two opposing shields as stops between. Outstanding surface quality and toned with light golden hues over the nickel alloy, and free of spots or handling issues. Certainly one of the finest known, particularly so with the desirable Cameo contrast.
