Lovely Choice VF 1652 Noe-10 Pine Tree Shilling 1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-10, Salmon 8-Diii, W-750. Rarity-3. Without Pellets at Trunk. VF-35 (PCGS). 68.06 grains. This richly original example is boldly toned throughout with blended olive-russet highlights to dominant mauve-gray patina. The obverse exhibits a bold tree and fully legible legend, although softness is evident at the second letter A in MASATHVSETS and the word IN. The date, denomination and most of the letters on the reverse are similarly bold, those at the lower left and upper right soft, yet still discernible. There are no troublesome marks or other post-production blemishes, direct lighting calling forth not only faint traces of original luster, but also pretty undertones of iridescent powder blue and champagne-apricot. Straight clips at the top, left and right, shallower ragged clip at the lower left relative to the obverse, the minters obviously going to great lengths to reduce the planchet's weight to the statutory limit. Waviness to the planchet at the top and bottom are typical of these coins made on a rocker press. Noe-10 is not one of the attributions generally considered part of the Reversed Ns variety, but even so the letter N in ENGLAND on the reverse is retrograde. Really a lovely example, it is difficult for us to imagine a more inviting Large Planchet Pine Tree shilling of any variety at the middle reaches of the grading scale. PCGS# 45370.
