- POLAND. Danzig. Preliminaries to and the Peace of Westphalia Silver Medal, "1644". Danzig (Dadler) Mint. NGC AU-58. cf. Pax in Nummis-83 (without date); cf. Maue-54 (same). Weight: 58.9 gms. By Sebastian Dadler. Obverse: The war goddess Bellona fights with Pax, the goddess of peace, for control of the earth, which is held in hand at left; Reverse: Pax stands triumphant on fallen Mars, radiant sun shining upon Pax; in background, cityscape flanked by Themis and Abundantia, goddesses of order and plenty. A simply phenomenal medal honoring the beginnings of peace talks in Munster to end the Thirty Years War, this impressive medal is certainly a masterwork of artisanship. The fine details are fully impressed on the flan, and soft luster is retained along with handsome light rainbow toning throughout.
