- Condition Census 1795 O-115 Half Dollar
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. O-115, T-10. Rarity-4+. Two Leaves. AU-55 (PCGS).
A visually stunning and conditionally rare example of the United States Mint's earliest half dollar design. Plenty of soft satin luster shines forth nicely through an overlay of warm dove and olive-gray patina. The surfaces are smooth and inviting, and uncommonly so for a Flowing Hair half dollar that acquired a bit of light wear. Indeed, the wear is so minimal that softness to most of the central high points has more to do with characteristic striking incompleteness than commercial use. Free of both adjustment marks and post-production distractions, this is a phenomenal coin to represent the type, date or variety in an advanced numismatic cabinet. Tompkins Die Stage 3/3.
Overton-115 is a scarcer die marriage for the 1795 Flowing Hair half dollar issue, and it a major rarity in Mint State with only one example currently known. The offered coin is tied for CC#3 per the listing in the Spring 2022 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839.
Provenance: From the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation.
