- 1899 United States Assay Commission Medal. By Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan. JK AC-43. Rarity-5. Silver. AU-58 (NGC).
33 mm. Deep steel-gray patina with lighter golden-apricot outlines to many of the design elements. A bold matte-like specimen with only a trace of rub precluding a Mint State designation. According to the annual report of the mint director, 40 silver Assay Commission medals were produced for 1899, along with 10 bronze impressions. There is no mention of white metal strikings from these dies, although we have offered two such examples in recent years: the Dreyfuss-Jewell specimen most recently offered as lot 204 in our March 2020 Baltimore Auction; and the Brand-Keusch specimen cataloged as Uncirculated in our (Stack's) November 2008 sale.
Provenance: From the Larry Baber Collection. Earlier ex Presidential Coin and Antique Co., Inc.'s Auction #36, Part I, May 1984, lot 283; Presidential Coin and Antique Co., Inc.'s Richard B. Dusterberg Collection, October 2000, lot 378. Lot tags included.
