- An AMAZING early Seated half dime. Seeing coins that were clearly minted to circulate in the antebellum period makes us marvel that some have survived the ravages of the Civil War, western and industrial expansion, etc. This SUPERB GEM is very high end, in fact, it looks very close to the MS67+ CAC we sold in our September 2016 Regency Auction. In fact, this one, the toning is more evenly distributed. Awesome mint luster blooms on both sides, bringing life to the blushes of blue, peach, orange, and gold tones, surrounding vivid silver centers. Every detail is very well struck and sharply defined; the eye appeal is AMAZING in every sense. While listed as 49/8 there has been some debate, including famed collector, Gene Gardner, who said that the digit under the date is a 6, not an 8; and with the aid of a strong glass, this cataloger also believes that this is a 49/6, rather than 49/8. It is coins like this that make collectors stop and think, and part of what makes this hobby so much fun. PCGS 5, NGC 4, CAC 3. The most recent example sold in March 2017 for $11,163 which was a reoffering of the Gardner coin. Only two coins are finer, including a 67+ we sold two years ago, and the MS68 that was in the Law-Simpson Collection. This marvelous SUPERB GEM will be the delight of any advanced collector and will see very strong bidding when it crosses the block, we can see it bringing a record price! Cert.
