- MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC AU-53. HOH-D6/S2; KM-376.2; DP-Do01. Small Libertad-Staggered ray and Defiant Snake. Variety with superscript "s" of Granos above end stop of legend with die chip at front of "D" of mintmark. The snake has a bend on either side of the eagle's beak with left portion below the "R" of "REPUBLICA". A small "b" hidden on lower left portion of rock. Tip of tail feathers is even with right most inner berry of wreath. This nicely preserved example offers a pleasing appearance with boldly struck devices, including complete "Libertad" and full Eagle's breast, displaying light attractive gray tone with hints of richer coloration in the protected areas. The "b" on the rock could be the initial of Bernardo Casale who was awarded compensation for his participation in the design competition. Estimate: $3,500 - $5,000.
