- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-939, Pollock-1052. Rarity-5. Proof-64 (PCGS). 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-930, Pollock-1035. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 BN (NGC). Standard Silver design with a right facing bust of Liberty in the center of the obverse design. Liberty is wearing a soft cap ornamented with two stars, and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY crosses her shoulder. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the periphery and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed on a scroll below. The letters in the word LIBERTY are incuse, the point of the truncation of the bust is distant from the scroll, the tip of Liberty's cap is under the center of the final letter S in STATES and there is no initial B within the fold of the ribbon at the back of the cap. The reverse design exhibits a wreath of corn and cotton around the denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1870, with the word STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.<br /> A lovely specimen with stronger eye appeal than even the near-Gem grade might imply, both sides exhibit beautiful cobalt-blue and olive-russet rim highlights around lighter, nearly untoned centers. Well mirrored in finish, with only a few wispy handling marks precluding an even higher grade.
