- 1876-S Liberty Double Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). With effulgent mint frost, vivid rose-orange patina, and freedom from all but a few trivial abrasions, this remarkable near-Gem looks more like a high quality Type III double eagle than an identically graded example of the more conditionally challenging Type II design. A full, razor sharp strike rounds out an impressive list of attributes for this simply beautiful coin. No date among Type II double eagles, 1866 through 1876, can be deemed common, though a few dates are more apt to make an appearance in Mint State among the design type. The present beauty is among the dozen finest examples of the date certified by PCGS, a fact worthy of careful consideration when you plan your bidding activity.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
A lovely, lustrous coin, this double eagle will be just right for inclusion in a type set. As noted, the 1866 through 1876 design with motto on the reverse and the denomination spelled as TWENTY D. is difficult to find. In fact, it is far the rarest of the major motifs, these being: 1850-1866 (no motto), 1866-1876 (as here), 1877-1907 (as preceding but with denomination spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS), MCMVII High Relief (1907), 1907-1908 (Arabic numerals, no motto), 1908-1933 (with motto). If you are looking for an interesting set to build, consider obtaining one of each of these seven. Our sale will give you a nice start.
