- GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Peru - Peru. State of Los Altos. Quetzaltenango. 8 Reales, ND (1839-40). PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield; Countermark: AU Details.
KM-77.9; Jovel-Type IV countermark. Type I Countermark, Rising sun left of mountain, Quetzal bird left perched atop mountain countermark within circular boarder. Issued by decree of 15 July 1839 concluding 30 January 1840. EXCESSIVELY RAREand probably UNIQUEcountermark/host coin combination. Countermark applied to reverse over previous Peru Royalist 1824 crown countermark. All on an 1823-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales, short tassels variety (KM-130). Host coin exhibits pleasant gray toning and a wealth of detail despite being countermarked on two separate occasions in disparate parts of the Americas. Both the host date and the royalist stamp date are clearly discernible, and the later Type I countermark is deeply impressed though at a slight angle to the surface. A fascinating piece that portrays both the political and economic turmoil occurring during the close of Spanish rule and birth of Independence of Latin America.
Due to problems of illegitimate specie in circulation a decree was issued 15 July requiring all coins to be brought to the treasury to be assayed and countermarked. Any pieces found to be false or lacking were cut in two and returned. The stamp employed for the countermarking process was used in the biannual verification of weights and measures used by merchants.
