详细说明: 1855-C Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter Variety 1 (16-I), the only known dies. AU-53 (PCGS). Produced in fewer numbers than any other Charlotte Mint Quarter Eagle, the 1855-C (just 3,677 coins struck) is the rarest delivery in this Southern gold series after only the 1843-C Small Date. Writing in the 2008 edition of the excellent reference <em>Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861</em>, Doug Winter accounts for only 85-105 coins extant in all grades. The present lot offers a handsome rose-olive AU with mostly small, wispy abrasions scattered about from time spent in active circulation. The overall strike is typically soft for the issue, but there is some bolder definition to be seen, especially on the obverse. One of numerous important Quarter Eagle offerings in this auction, this '55-C would make an important addition to a specialized collection.
