- GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Saxon. Kings of All England. Penny, ND (975-78). Lincoln Mint; Eanulf, moneyer. Edward the Martyr. PCGS AU-55.
S-1142; N-763. Sole (BMC i) type. Obverse: + EΛDVVΛRD REX AИGLΘ, diademed and draped bust left; Reverse: + EΛNVLF MΘ LINDEOLE (LF inverted), short cross pattee. Very attractively toned and handsomely struck, this RARE type offers a great portrait and remains wholesome with very little in the way of handling.
Edward followed Eadgar onto a contested throne, with Aethelred II, his half-brother, also claiming the throne. Very little information survives about the brief reign of Edward, though it is known that he attempted to force monastic reforms upon the church. An unwilling church paired with a disputed succession made Edward many enemies. He was murdered at Corfe Castle, though it is unclear who did so. Aethelred, his mother, and the church have all been posited as the guilty party. Later venerated as a martyr, he is venerated as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches.
Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000.
Provenance: From the Paul C. Runze Collection.
Ex: Goldberg 5 (4/2000) Lot # 4596.
