- 1861 Liberty Head Half Eagle. MS-62 (NGC). Exceptionally attractive at the BU level of preservation, this lustrous, satin to modestly semi-reflective example is further adorned with vivid rose-orange patina. Striking detail is bold to sharp throughout, the surfaces pleasingly smooth for the assigned grade. Produced on the brink of the U.S. Civil War, the 1861 half eagle is one of the most popular issues of the No Motto type, boasting a hearty mintage of 688,084 coins. Mint State examples remain scarce in today's market, and even those are typically plagued by bagmarks and other impairments.
