- 1858 Pattern Indian Cent. Judd-211, Pollock-262. Rarity-4. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-65 (NGC).
The obverse is the Indian head left of Liberty as adopted in 1859. The reverse has the open oak wreath with no shield, with ONE / CENT within. Curiously this design was adopted in 1860, but with the addition of a small shield at the top of the open wreath. The surfaces are glittering and bright, particularly on the obverse where Liberty's cheek is pristine with undisturbed frost and no spotting. A high wire rim exists on the obverse too. For the reverse there is a touch of light patina and a bold strike, with the O of ONE slightly doubled to the lower right. Impressive quality and outstanding pedigree.
NGC Census: 5; 2 finer (PR-67 finest) in all designations.
PCGS# 11893.
Provenance: From S.H. and H. Chapman's Richard B. Winsor Collection sale, December 1895, part of lot 1121 (a 12-piece set of 1838 pattern cents); J.M. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; and our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, May 1996, lot 133.
