- Rare Trade Issue Struck by the Royal Prussian Asiatic Society of Emden
GERMANY. Prussia. Piaster, ND (1751/2)-ICM. Aurich Mint. Friedrich II "the Great". PCGS AU-55.
Dav-2591; KM-Unlisted; Olding-368. Surpassed in the PCGS census by just two examples, this RAREtype presents enticingly toned surfaces with a deeper nature accentuating the devices. The level of wear is extremely minimal, with no problems of which to speak, save for a minor planchet issue on the head of the Friedrich.
Furthering its appeal that much more is the iconography upon the reverse. Issued as a trade coin for use in the Far East, where silver was at a premium and where a profit of 22% could be expected given the disparity, this type (struck for just over two months between December 1751 and February 1752) features a wildman on one side and a rather stereotypical representation of a man in contemporary Chinese attire on the other. The company's abbreviation, KPACVE, is present between them, standing for Königlich-Prussian-Asian-Compagnie von Emden, or the Royal Prussian Asiatic Society of Emden. A great example with numerous collecting avenues of interest.
Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000.
Provenance: From the Robert C. Knepper Collection.
