- Glossy, semi-prooflike luster graces both the obverse and reverse of this scarce and magnificent Sheldon-101 – a coin that is ABSOLUTELY UNEQUALLED in private hands, and is at least as fine as the example permanently impounded in the American Numismatic Society’s collection, called AU55 by Noyes.
New to the Condition Census, this specimen boasts appealing chestnut brown surfaces with substantial mint red visible from the first “A” of “AMERICA” through the fraction on the reverse. A handful of trivial marks – barely visible without magnification – account for PCGS’s grade of MS62BN.
Early in the MDS (Middle Die State), Breen state II, showing light clashing before Liberty’s throat and behind her tresses, as well as a faint die crack through the top of “MERIC”. Struck slightly off-center at 5:00 with some weakness along the bottom edge of the obverse, as typical for the variety.
Our EAC grade for this piece is AU58, an astounding 18 points higher than the next finest example in private hands: the T. James Clark/Sheldon/ANS/Naftzger/Husak coin, which was called XF40 by Noyes, and realized $40,250 in Heritage’s sale of The Walter J. Husak Collection in February of 2008.
The sale of this coin represents a rare opportunity for discriminating Large Cent specialists.
The Sheldon-101 attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1 at PCGS; none finer for the variety. Newly discovered in 2016.
