A very challenging and rare Civil War date half eagle. Of the 27,612 struck, fewer than 100 are thought to survive today (PCGS CoinFacts suggests 80 in all grades, with just two in Mint State). David Akers wrote in his opus on gold coins, "I do not know of a specimen that would grade better than EF." Many known have issues that would preclude numeric grading, so this generally pleasing AU53 is a rare prize indeed. There is a hint of luster clinging to the fields surrounding the devices. Typical for the issue the design elements have some weakness, especially on the mint mark. Scattered contact is seen, though evenly distributed on both sides, none of these are singularly distracting. The color is pleasing. This is a rare date and a great collector grade piece. PCGS 5, NGC 11. The last NGC-graded piece sold nine years ago for $6,463. More recently a PCGS AU50 sold for $9,850 in May 2021. The AU53 Collectors Universe price is $11,000. VERY RARE any finer. This is a great opportunity for the advanced collector. Good luck. Cert. Number 2105350027 PCGS # 8299
