- GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Saxon. Kings of Wessex. Penny, ND (ca. 858-64). Canterbury Mint; Heaberht, moneyer. Aethelberht. PCGS AU-55.
S-1053; N-620. Inscribed Cross type. Obverse: + ΛEÐELBEΛR(HT) REX, bareheaded and draped bust right; Reverse: + (HE)ΛBEΛ/R(HT) - MO within arms of voided long cross; N - E - T - Λ in quarters. Very well centered and struck, this RARE type features a deep cabinet tone and exhibits just the slightest degree of gentle handling upon the high points. An excellent survivor with charming eye appeal.
The son of Aethelwulf, Aethelberht was the first of three brothers to rule in Wessex. Aethelberht went on pilgrimage to Rome, and his reign featured minor skirmishes with Vikings. He died in 865 and was succeeded by his brothers, both of whom he appeared to be on good terms with.
Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000.
