Only 125,000 dimes were struck in 1828, produced from two pairs of dies. The present coin is struck from JR-1, the SMALL DATE variety, easily identified by the square base 2 in the date. NGC has incorrectly called this JR-2, Large Date (which has a distinctive curled base to the 2). Richly toned and boldly lustrous, this near-GEM offers a glowing, underlying satin brilliance that brings the soft dove, olive, tan, russet, and peach gold to life. Well struck with all the details razor sharp in definition. A very attractive example for the date or type. PCGS 4, NGC 9, CAC 3. This is the ONLY MS64+ graded of either date style at NGC. The most recent CAC approved example was a PCGS- graded coin that sold over a decade ago! The Collectors Universe value is $8,000 and the MS64 CAC CPG value is $6,850. We expect this near-GEM will bring a very strong bid when it crosses the block. VERY RARE any finer, this coin belongs in a special collection of early dimes. Cert. Number 5789313014 PCGS # 4510
