FROM THE MHS COLLECTION A fabulous GEM B-1, one of the FINEST KNOWN for the die marriage, tied for second finest in both the Tompkins Census and the Rea, et al Census. This is also the Tompkins Plate Coin for the B-1 die marriage. This resplendent GEM is a classic with great provenance dating back to the mid-1960s. A full, satiny brilliance and vibrant mint frost is brought to life when the lustrous surfaces are rotated in a light. Sharply struck with crisply defined devices on both obverse and reverse. An arching die crack from the rim just below Star 1 crosses over the bust through her hair, and to the rim at Star 13. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees clockwise. Both sides show soft, iridescent toning that is particularly lovely on the reverse. The eye appeal is excellent, matching its awesome pedigree! Ex Lester Merkin, October 1966, lot 263; the New York Connoisseur's Collection, American Numismatic Rarities, March 2006, lot 631; Stack's, March 2009, lot 3768; intermediaries; our consignor. PCGS 9, NGC 8, CAC 7. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $24,000. PCGS has graded just four coins finer. The last one we sold brought $24,675 in January 2018. This is a great looking coin that will see very strong bidding when it crosses the block. A wonderful addition to any early quarter set or type collection. Cert. Number 6371589 PCGS # 5353
