- 1859 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-238, Pollock-294. Rarity-5. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). A bust of Liberty faces right on the obverse, a wreath of oak and vine leaves on her head. A scroll inscribed LIBERTY crosses Liberty's shoulder, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1859 is below. Some numismatists have referred to this design as the "French Head of Liberty." The reverse design, attributed to Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet, displays a wreath of corn, cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, wheat and oak leaves in the center of which is the denomination HALF DOLLAR. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.<br /> This is a handsome near-Gem with a full strike and even medium-brown patina. There is very little precluding a higher grade, and we see no sizeable or otherwise individually distracting blemishes.
