- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-972, Pollock-1083. Rarity-7+. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-64 RB (NGC). Bust of Liberty right in Phrygian cap, stars on cap, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, IN GOD WE TRUST on banner below, reverse with agricultural wreath, STANDARD SILVER around, date below, 50 / CENTS within. Deep golden brown with reflective fields and frosty motifs alive with varied blue and rose iridescence. The uspatterns.com website calls this: "The standard silver design with a reverse similar to the one used in 1869. These were sold with the other denominations for $15. Two different obverse dies with Liberty raised on the scroll were used on these. They differ, primarily, in the arrangement of the head to the letters in the word STATES. This [Judd-972] has the tip of the cap under the second S in STATES and does not have Barber's initial B in the folds of the ribbon at the back of Liberty's cap." One of just two examples of Judd-972 certified by NGC in any color designation, and the finest of those two.
