- GERMANY. Medallic Issues. Empire. Martin Luther Gold Medal, 1917. Munich Mint. NGC MS-66.
Kienast-191; cf. Brozatus-1493 (silver); cf. Whiting-841 (same). By K. Goetz. Diameter: 36mm; Weight: 22.27 gms. Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Reformation. Obverse: Capped and cloaked bust of Martin Luther facing slightly right; Reverse: Double-bowled fountain; at the top, crucifix bearing Christ bleeding from his wounds; to left and right, woman and soldier draw forth the blood from the lower bowl. Presenting Goetz's iconic style, this INCREDIBLY RAREoffering in gold is an undoubted Gem, offering delightful matte surfaces and an intense degree of brilliance. Issued during the quadricentennial of the Reformation, the events of the day are not lost to the viewer, as the presence of the soldier at the right of the reverse reminds one that Goetz's Germany was still in the middle of the first Great War.
Estimate: $2,000 - $4,000.
