- 1909-S Indian Eagle. MS-64 (NGC). CAC. The 1909-S edges out such other issues in this series as the 1907 Wire Rim, 1908-D Motto, 1912-S and 1916-S to rank as the 10th rarest Indian Eagle in terms of total number of Mint State coins believed extant. Attrition through circulation was obviously high for this issue, as Mint State survivors are surprisingly elusive given a respectable mintage of 292,350 pieces. Most Uncs in today's market grade no finer than MS-63, and most also trace their pedigree to a small hoard of low-end examples that surfaced in the late 1970s.<br /> With only a few wispy, hardly distracting abrasions, this fully lustrous near-Gem obviously owes its existence to another source entirely. It is a conditionally rare coin that also sports full, frosty luster and vivid rose-orange color. The strike is razor sharp throughout and rounds out an impressive list of attributes for this important Indian Ten.
